US Spec or Euro Spec? Why It Matters Before You Buy LED Tail Lights for Your Jeep JK

Table of Contents
Most people buying aftermarket LED tail lights for a Jeep JK assume any JK light will fit any JK. It won't. There are two completely different wiring configurations — and if you order the wrong one, the connectors won't even line up.
The Problem Nobody Mentions at Checkout
You order a set of aftermarket LED tail lights for your Wrangler. They arrive, you pull out the factory lights, and the connectors don't match. Or they physically connect but the turn signals don't behave correctly. Or one function works and another doesn't.
This isn't a defective product. It's a spec mismatch — and it's more common than you'd think, because Jeep built the wrangler differently depending on where in the world it was sold.

Two Versions of the Same Jeep
Jeep produced the JL & JK in two primary wiring configurations for the tail lights:
US Spec (North America)
The brake light and turn signal share the same bulb and the same circuit. When you hit the brakes, the tail light gets brighter. When you activate the turn signal, that same light flashes. One wire handles both functions. The turn signal flashes red.

Euro / Export Spec (Europe, Middle East, Australia, and other markets)
These markets require a separate amber turn signal — by law. So the Euro spec JK has an additional wire dedicated to the turn signal, running independently from the brake light circuit, so does the JL JT tail lights. The connector has more pins, and the male/female orientation is actually reversed compared to the US version.

Same truck, different rear wiring, different connector, different light behavior.
How to Tell Which Spec You Have
The quickest way is to look at your factory tail lights before you remove them:
You have US Spec if:
- Your turn signals flash red (same light as the brake light)
- The connector on the back of the factory light has 4 pins
- You're in North America and bought the vehicle new from a US/Canadian dealer
You have Euro / Export Spec if:
- Your turn signals flash amber (separate from the brake light)
- The connector on the back of the factory light has 5 pins
- You purchased the vehicle outside North America, or imported it
💡 Pro Tip: If you're unsure, pull out one factory tail light and count the pins on the connector. Four pins = US spec. Five pins = Euro/Export spec. It takes two minutes and removes all guesswork.
Why This Matters When Buying LED Tail Lights
Most aftermarket LED tail lights for the JK are manufactured for the US spec configuration. If you have a Euro spec JK and order a US spec light:
- The connectors may be physically reversed — male where you need female, or vice versa
- The pin count won't match — you have 5 pins in your harness, the light expects 4
- The turn signal behavior will be wrong — the light may flash red instead of amber, which is illegal in many Euro/Export markets

Some sellers including LOYO offer both versions,. Others only offer one and don't clearly state which. Always check before you buy.
What Are Your Options If You Have a Euro Spec JK?
Option 1: Buy Euro spec LED tail lights
Some manufacturers produce versions specifically for Euro/Export JKs with the correct connector orientation, pin count, and amber turn signal function. These are less common but they exist — look for listings that specifically mention "Euro spec," "ECE compliant," or "Export model."
Option 2: Use a US spec light with an adapter harness
Some brands offer adapter harnesses designed to bridge the gap between US spec LED tail lights and a Euro spec JK wiring harness. This is a plug-and-play solution that doesn't require any cutting or splicing. Check whether your preferred tail light brand offers a matching adapter.
Option 3: Wire it yourself
If you're comfortable with automotive electrical work, it's possible to adapt a US spec tail light to a Euro spec harness by replacing the connector and adjusting the pin assignments. This requires knowing your wire colors and having the right crimp connectors. Not recommended unless you have experience — getting it wrong means lights that don't work or, worse, a short circuit.
The One Check That Saves You All of This
Before you add anything to your cart, do this:
- Pull out one factory tail light (two screws, takes 2 minutes)
- Count the pins on the connector on the car body side
- Note whether your turn signals currently flash red or amber
Four pins + red turn signal = US spec, buy US spec lights.
Five pins + amber turn signal = Euro/Export spec, buy accordingly or get an adapter.

That's it. One check before you order, and you avoid the most common LED tail light installation problem JK owners run into.
